Let's Get Comical! - Week of March 6, 2013

Another week, another Wednesday, another release of new comic books!

yet another light load this week with only two pickups. Loving these light weeks, as otherwise I'd still be buying Green Lantern, Superman, and like 3 other DC series I just have no interest in reading. Plus it's much, much lighter on my wallet. Would you rather drop $6-8 dollars weekly or $20-30? Thought so.

This Week's Pickups:

- Superior Spider-Man #5
- Legends of the Dark Knight #6

Beware of Spoilers, as usual!

Legends of the Dark Knight #6

This is a fun series I've been picking up each month for... well 6 months I guess. The name is what the comic is, three short stories, or "legends," about Batman (all written by different writers and drawn by different artists) and his adventures around Gotham City. The stories are always short, inoffensive, simple, and most important of all, fun to read. This month's set of stories features Batman chasing some C-store robbers during the daytime ("I THOUGHT THE DAYTIME WAS SAFE!"), and taking them out one by one. The second story was a little strange, as they set up a showdown with Killer Kroc yet Batman randomly winds up fighting a dragon. Yes, a DRAGON. And they never explain anything about it. Umm, okay then. Third story involves Penguin hiring some sort of ghost with a VAN OF HORROR~! to haunt his enemies, yet the ghost goes ROGUE and starts assaulting Penguin. This leads to a funny incident where Penguin must rely on Batman's help, and it's revealed that the van absorbs you by showing you your worst fear. Of course Batman has already SEEN his worst fear. The second story sucked and the third was a bit to "out there" for a Batman comic but the first was a good read.

Superior Spider-Man #5

I haven't exactly been enjoying this series, but two weeks ago Issue 4 was intriguing, and this one actually made me raise my eyebrow with interest. So a villain named Massacre is on the loose, shooting up a burger joint with plans to shoot up Penn Station in a similar manner. Because the Octospidey has sent robotic spiders around the city to monitor things, he has time to plan his strategy to stop Massacre, along with doing other things like get a chemistry tutor in order to get his doctorate as Peter Parker. So the Massacre, erm, massacre goes down and as Spidey is on his way he calls the cops as the ghost of Peter Parker realizes that despite his hero flaws, Octospidey is kind of a genius. So the cops and Spidey wind up getting rid of Massacre's machine guns and he breaks down. But Octospidey doesn't want to keep letting villains get arrested only to escape again, so Otto does something Spidey vowed to never do - he SHOOTS MASSACRE IN THE HEAD. This is CRAZY epic stuff for a Spidey comic since Spider-Man doesn't let people die. After a rough start, I want to see more!

Overall Thoughts: I liked this week's haul, for the most part. Legends was alright, nothing inoffensive if you ignore the final two stories. Previous issues have been better though. Superior totally surprised me though, as they've added a unique twist to Spider-Man. I was expecting them to run with the rumored "Peter is really Otto meaning that Otto had sex with Mary Jane" rape storyline that was rumored to be going down, but Dan Slott has taken a complete 180 from where I thought they were heading, and I'm really interested to see where things go.
