Blah Blah Blah

Blah blah blah.

Blah blah, blahblahblah.

It doesn't matter what I say, because the Friday Film Fiesta is written for those who form their own opinions on movies.

Last week you were asked if you would risk your career to spoil a movie if you worked in Hollywood, and you answered no. And apparently that Bad Robot picture was fake.

  • Box Office News: Captain America continues to unleash freedom all over the competition
  • Trailer Time: Check out new trailers for Jessabelle, Boyhood and more!
  • In Theaters This Week: Brick Mansions, The Other Woman and The Quiet Ones

Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)

In 2008, Iron Man was a surprise hit, and a post-credits scene kicked off a campaign that led to several Marvel flicks which built up to 2012's The Avengers. One of those movies was 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger, which introduced us to the Captain America character and gave us a bit of foundation for the Avengers movie the following year. The first Cap movie was a blast, an action-packed movie with a hint of World War II nostalgia. But with Cap's backstory revealed, the sequel decided to go in a totally different direction, retaining the action, but replacing the nostalgia with some modern day drama we can all relate to.

The plot is reminiscent of a Tom Clancy book or movie, with lots of political drama, although it keeps the politics to a minimum for dumb-dumbs like me who don't follow politics and wouldn't understand more advanced political vocabulary. They also throw in lots of action, humor and everything else we've come to expect from Marvel movies. There are lots of twists and turns in the plot, and I won't spoil them because they really do make the movie.

While I very much enjoyed the movie, I did have one slight problem with it. Rather than feeling like a true sequel to The First Avenger, The Winter Soldier feels more like a sequel to The Avengers, or "Avengers 1.5" in comic lingo. While both Iron Man 3 and Thor: The Dark World both focused exclusively on the titular characters, The Winter Soldier focuses on the rest of the Avengers (Cap, Black Widow and Nick Fury) who won't be in their own movies. Outside of some brief moments at the beginning of the movie (we see Cap has a list of music, movies and food he needs to catch up on from when he was frozen, and we see Cap visit a Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum), the story is all about the team as opposed to the individual. Even the relationship between Cap and the Winter Soldier is only briefly touched on, taking a back seat to the main plot involving S.H.I.E.L.D. although they have Sebastian Stan (the Winter Soldier) signed on for multiple Marvel flicks as opposed to Chris Evans who I believe is only signed on for three more, and the post credits scene hints that we will be seeing more of the Winter Soldier in the future.

One other thing I really enjoyed about the movie were the little details and cameos. There is a point about midway through the movie where a S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent namedrops some really important people from the Marvel Universe, and it makes me think that we'll be getting movies with these guys in the not-so-distant future. We have an An- Man movie coming out next year, and Cap 3 announced for 2016, but the Marvel Cinematic Universe has been mapped out to 2028! There's a lot of time to make these movies.

Overall, The Winter Soldier ranks in the top tier of the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies released so far. I would rank it below Avengers, but equal to the first Iron Man and Cap movies. I want to see more Captain America, and with only Guardians of the Galaxy to tide us over, it will be a long wait for Age of Ultron next summer!

    FieUStA

Welcome back to a less foolish edition of the Friday Film Fiesta!

Thanks for completely NO SELLING the joke last week. Was it because it contained actual news for the first time ever? Or was it because nobody threatened to quit the Blog this year? I mean nobody even mentioned the 2014 WELPies announcement, but we established long ago that nobody here actually reads anything that has been posted, so I expected that anyway.

Two weeks ago I asked you if you would ever kill someone over a movie disagreement, and you answered no.

  • Box Office News: Another Old Man Ahnold flick gets left off of Noah's Ark and drowns
  • Trailer Time: Check out new trailers for Palo Alto, Lucky Them and more!
  • In Theaters This Week: Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Next Week's Notable DVD Releases: August: Osage County, Grudge Match, The Hobbit 2 and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones

Glennecticut pops in to brag about a victory in some sort of Shooty Hoops Chickball Fight (and also provides a soiler to tourists that northeastern leaves turn the same color every year):
  • If you're sick of all of these newfangled horror flicks never making any sense, a solution is finally here!
  • Some Guy has taken apart The Simpsons and put them back together again. And no, we're not talking about the recently announced Simpsons LEGO Collectible Minifigure Line.

  • Check out this alternate ending for Gravity!
  • Now this could come in handy if you want to see movies before they are released. Or you could just pirate them, I guess, but the Fiesta does not condone the breaking of laws!
  • Kevin Feige is interviewed in this week's Bloomberg Businessweek, and apparently the Marvel Universe is planned out through 2028.
  • For those of you still confused about aspect ratio (like me!), watch this!
  • If you live in Detroit, you can be in Batman vs. Superman!
  • Weeeeeeeellllllllllllp
  • Things you might not know! The Breakfast Club! Raiders of the Lost Ark!

And that brings us to this week's poll.

Do you like the look of the Michael Bay TMNT?
    Yes
    No
    Meh

    Robocop (2014)

    "I wouldn't buy that for a dollar."

I saw this movie way back in February about a week after it was released, but I've been unmotivated to write about it until now, for some odd reason. It wasn't that the movie was bad, it's just that it was... okay. Which I actually texted my movie fanatic friend (and huge Robocop fan) Andy after I saw it: "RobOKcop"

I have no personal connection to the Robocop movies. I've never seen the first one (probably should get on that), nor have I seen the second one. I did watch the third back in 2010 for a roundtable discussion and it was about as bad as everyone says it is. In fact, just like I mention in the roundtable, the only thing I could really tell you about Robocop is that in elementary school I had a Robocop action figure that I brought to school for show and tell. The toy fell out of my backpack and fell maybe two feet onto those weird carpet/rug floors schools used to have, and SHATTERED. Like, the body just broke in half and the head, arms, and legs had nothing to attach to, and thus, the toy was ruined.

So I can't say I was excited about this reboot when it was announced like a lot of people were. In fact, I wasn't excited because most of these reboots/remakes of not-so-old movies have largely sucked. I expected more of the same with this one, and even read an article that I threw into the February 7 Fiesta about how the new film completely misses the point of the original. So when I went in, I basically had no expectations. That almost made the film seem much better.

All in all, it was your typical modern day action/sci-fi movie with lots of CGI thrown in. And oddly enough, one of the nastiest things I've ever seen when Robocop's armor and robotics are removed. And of course, the forced references to the original movie, such as the quote I used at the top of this review. The best part of the movie? Perhaps the makeup. It took me an embarrassingly long amount of time to realize that one of the main characters was Gary Oldman. Either I'm used to seeing him in the Christopher Nolan Batman flicks, or nobody knows what Gary Oldman actually looks like, thus he can change his appearance with the snap of a finger ala Johnny Depp.

Save this one for a Netflix binge, or the Wal-Mart $5 DVD Death Bin.
