Let's Get Comical! - Week of 2/27/13

Get behind what?

Yes, I meant to post a column featuring last week's comics, but it was a big load and some of the comics were really hard to read. So I'll be posting that ASAP. But for now let's TRY to stay caught up with this week's three comic load, including what might be a historic issue.

This Week's Haul:
- Aquaman #17
- Avenging Spider-Man #17
- Batman Incorporated #8

SPOILERS AHEAD!

Aquaman #17

This is my first time reading this one since... around January or February of last year. So a skirmish in one of the previous issues has led to Atlantean weaponry being scattered about the ocean floor, which scavengers are picking up and using. Some whalers have taken possession of a weird looking crab gun and get into a fight with some environmentalists before Aquaman and an Atlantis army intervene. They put an end to the violence until Aquaman is summoned by Amanda Waller who is concerned with the use of the weapons around the world. Aquaman returns to the seas where he summons fish and other ocean creatures to help him, until a mysterious creature in a cave speaks to himself about Aquaman's days as King of the Seven Seas being over. Meanwhile, cops arrest Mera in a corner store. This was... really lame. I know I haven't been keeping up with this series but there was just a whole lot of nothing in this one. If it wasn't so confusing and vague it would have been much, MUCH better. Take a pass this month.

Avenging Spider-Man #17

Another series I haven't read in quite some time. Anyway, this is continuing with the "Doc Ock is Spidey" storyline, and Spider-Man is summoned by the FF to babysit. Joy. They did this storyline in Amazing Spider-Man a month before Spider Island two years ago. So anyway, Octospidey is babysitting when the FF headquarters comes under attack by some sort of timeline balancing organization who accuse the kids of ruining the space time continuum in the future, and thus they must be destroyed. They also know Octospidey's secret. But all ends well when Spidey uses his villainy to threaten the child who made some plans for a device causing the problems. Well, except for Octospidey stealing Sandman's brainwaves from the FF headquarters. Started out awful, but this issue actually picked up and ended up being pretty fun. It was also much more entertaining than the Superior Spider-Man series has been so far.

Batman Incorporated #8

So this is the big issue of the week. Honestly I don't even know why I put the spoiler tag since DC spoils their own shit months before the issues come out. Why do that? Anyway, I'm about 4-5 issues behind in this one, as it was pushed back and forth after the Aurora, CO theater shootings. Batman and his buddies try to infiltrate a building where Talia al Ghul is holding Batman. A whole lot of nothing happens until Robin, Nightwing, Red Hood and all of Batman's other allies begin teaming up to take on the bad guy. The end result is Robin, Bruce's son Damian, being killed, with the final frames showing the family's agony over his death. I dunno. The issue started slow but the end was powerful. I just feel like they're killing off what has been a badass character for the sake of doing so, which is apparently the MO of a Grant Morrison comic. I'm not TOO familiar with his work, but I can't say I've enjoyed much of it.

Overall Thoughts: Meh. Best word I can think of to describe this week. Batman Inc. might wind up being historic but who knows. Aquaman sucked and Avenging Spider-Man was alright. This casual buyer says pick up Batman for curiosity's sake and skip the rest though. Money saved!
